Chaos and Controversy Plague Alachua Police Department

Battle for Alachua

Amidst a fanfare of sheriff's deputies and officers from around the County Sheriff Sadie Darnell appeared at the most recent orchestrated publicity event to take place at Alachua's City Hall. The Event: the introduction of the new interim Chief of Police.

What would have been expected as a display of love and loyalty to retiring Chief Robert Jernigan was instead an event nearly absent of reference to the long-term Chief.

Appearing before a joint meeting with the Alachua County Commission and that of the City Darnell introduced Captain Joel DeCoursey who she agreed to "loan" to the APD while they sought a full-time replacement. It appears that Darnell allowed City Manager Clovis Watson to personally select from among her command for a person of his own choosing. And he chose DeCoursey who is known to have a long personal history with Watson.

The event pre-dated Jernigan's scheduled retirement later this year due to the fact that, unexpectedly, one day last week Jernigan showed up for work but insted turned in his keys, his car, and badge. But in the absence of the Chief the Deputy Chief is lawfully empowered to step in to fill the vacuum. What was suddenly revealed this week was that Clayton Reiter, Deputy Chief of the APD, was on paid leave and under an internal investigation. That news alone should come as a shock given the fact that it has been Watson and Jernigan who have been at the center of the controversies and indeed proven criminal activities (such as fraudulently reporting Watson as a Police Officer, granting him powers of arrest and other restricted powers, and enabling him to receive pension benefits he was ineligible to receive as City Manager and reserved for those officers in the line of duty). Indeed I can personally attest to the fact that in my experiences over the past two years Clayton Reiter has been nothing but professional. From all appearances Reiter is one of those among the APD who respect the law and behave in an honest and ethical manner.

All this comes in the midst of the continuing controversy regarding the question of who controls the Alachua Police Department and for what purpose. Watson, who holds the additional title of Police Commissioner, has been considered the actual "head" of the APD for the past several years dictating commands from his political position (well, actually, City Manager's are supposed to be apolitical, but that's another story) in City Hall and expecting Chief Jernigan to dutifully obey. While Clovis was allowed to make several arrests, including that of myself for alleged "wiretapping," he was in direct violation of Article V of the Florida Constitution which prohibits dual office-holding. And someone in the APD as well as City Hall was responsible for fraudulently reporting Watson's status for both pension and police matters. All the while questions have been raised about the appearance that the APD had been used as a means of political strong-arming rather than actual law enforcement.

But these general questions of who and what only lead one to a myriad of particulars.

Why did Jernigan unexpectedly quit? How, when, and why was Deputy Chief Reiter removed from duty?

Word on the street is that Watson and Jernigan have had some kind of falling out creating this unexpected vacancy before a replacement for Jernigan was chosen.

As for Reiter's status there has never been any public accusation of his involvement of wrongdoing in APD, which accusations the Department has hardly been able to duck for several years, and most who know of his service, including myself - one of the Department's most vocal critics, have nothing but praise for his being one of that force who has consistently showed complete respect for the law and a professional demeanor.

But the coincidences of Jernigan's early departure, Reiter's unexplained absence, and Watson's personal pick for the interim stand-in only further concerns that Watson is desperately trying to avoid the appointment of a new Chief who refuse the role of loyal subordinate to Watson but is instead trying to find either an open ally or someone who, like Jernigan, would not dare challenge Watson's command. (See High Springs Herald: Many apply to be next Alachua police chief)

There is also another angle to this story of significant concern throughout Alachua County. Included among the list of applicants are two former members of the Alachua County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) who have recently left the department amid controversy while Darnell has attempted to clean up that agency from its deteriorated condition as left by her predecessor.

There has been no love lost between a small faction within the Sheriff's office and their political allies (primarily the coalition of the Jeff McAdams led union and certain "leaders" of the Republican Executive Committee of Alachua County (ACREC) who have allied to oust Darnell at the next election.). In fact Stafford Jones, the Chairman of the ACREC, recently conducted a poll in an effort to obtain support to back Clovis Watson for Sheriff rather than Lonnie Scott. (This raises ethical questions about Jones and the REC involving themselves in support for a candidate in backroom deals and prior to the opportunity of registered voters in that party to make their independent choice.)

Alachua's neighbor in High Springs also recently shocked many when it chose to hire James Troiano to replace their retiring Chief of Police. Troiano had left the ACSO after having been demoted by Darnell. The decision is a queer one not only for the fact that this establishes a factional war among law-enforcement agencies in this County (clearly jeopardizing public safety) along the political and factional divide regarding control of the Sheriff's Office. (One reason the County needs to take action as recommended to it to establish the Sheriff as a Charter office under its authority). Politics has thoroughly polluted and corrupted our local law enforcement community. But also because his record at the ACSO was reported in an investigatio as finding that "Troiano is severely lacking in the personal and professional skills to be a productive supervisor. It is clear he needs extensive training and behavioral adjustments in order to be a successful supervisor at the Alachua County Sheriff's Office." Yet this qualified him to head an entire law-enforcement agency? Queer indeed.

So we should not be surpised to learn that rumors emerging from within the Sheriff's domain are that Watson has narrowed his personal choice down to two of the numerous applicants. And if the City continues its precedent it will be Watson, alone, who will dictate this decision to the Commission who will dutifully "recognize" the choice.

Which two are rumored to be under serious consideration? Robert E. Chapman, who resigned as Director of the Jail in the midst of an investigation, and Chad Scott, the Sergeant fired by Darnell after an internal investigation discovered misconduct in reporting items related to his pay. That the rumor is that Watson has made a deal with Scott to take the helm should thus be given great consideration given the financial irregurities known to have existed in Watson's own relationship with APD from his collection of benefits as Deputy Chief that were only available to lower level officers, in the years prior to becoming City Manager, to his fraudulent activities to obtain pension benefits unavailable to him as City Manager.

No one can fail to see the desperate need for Watson to find a "loyal leuitenant" to replace Jernigan rather than the best applicant from the law enforcement rather than political perspective as well as the need to prevent an independent actor such as Reiter from having command in the interim.

The appearance of a deliberate purge of the APD of those who refuse to play the political pawn of the City Manager is also not a first in Alachua nor under Watson's rule. Several years ago Watson initiated a witch hunt against then Deputy Chief Steve Hammands as well as Officer Ed Peritore. These individuals had been involved, after Watson moved from APD to City Hall, in seeking to actually address the very real problem of Alachua being a center of hard drug distribution in North Florida. For some reason Hammond's success in this area was met instead with his termination for insubordination.

Indeed Watson has reason to fear Reiter, if he has reason to fear a leader of the Department who would follow the law and refuse the role of political pawn, because Reiter has recently demonstrated this trait in the lead up to the last political arrest orchestrated by Watson involving myself. This past August I was arrested (and battered) by Chief Jernigan and Officer Patrick Barcia. Barcia is the son of Alachua Mayor Jean Calderwood and has a checkered history from other law enforcement institutions. He is also the step-son of Hugh "Bud" Calderwood who was "leaking" information falely alleging that I had committed some kind of illegal and inappropriate act at a local gas station. It turned out that the information was coming directly from Chief Jernigan, rather than through the appropriate process (which involved Reiter as the person who reviewed and approved police reports), through Watson, to the Calderwoods.

It was in response to this that I began, unbeknown to any of those actors, a series of discussions with Clayton Reiter. I trusted Reiter having seen his leadership over the department last Spring one one of Jernigan's days off. I went to the Alachua City Hall with Carol Thomas and Michael Canney to seek to obtain public records. Although nothing occurred other than my mere presence two armed uniformed officers arrived in response to a call about a "disturbance" coming from a source in City Hall.

This indeed had become a pattern - a deliberate pattern - of the political use of the APD by Watson and his crew to try and silence my activities by attempting to create the false impression that I was threatening and disruptive as a means to prevent me from entering public buildings or attending public meetings. The pattern: I would arrive, make a request, would be ignored or denied, I would explain the law, the "law" would be called, and a report would be generated claiming I was disruptive and at times they would threaten me with arrest for trespassing and indeed on this occasion to actually do that - they arrested me at the police station as I was seeking to file a complaint for the criminal violation of my rights by persons within the department who had accessed my personal banking records and released information on the internet. It turned out that the perpetrators were Jernigan, Watson, and Calderwood.

But on this particular occasion, it being Jernigan's day off, Clayton Reiter was in charge. He arrived moments after the armed officers and witnessed that there was no disturbance. Instead I had to argue to the officer to have Deputy Clerk Alan Henderson agree to meet with me to discuss public records matters. When I asked the officer in charge if he found a "disturbance" (the event was videotaped) he had to admit that there was none. But then, mysteriously, he could not identify who exactly made the call for police help from within City Hall.

Jernigan and Watson had been compiling, since my victory in the wiretapping case, a dossier attempting to criminalize the investigative and related activities of myself and Michael Canney. It was filled with instances of such manufactured "disturbances" documented only by police reports, often quite exaggerated, from the APD and with City staff and officials making the complaints. Included in these complaints were allegations that the staff and officials feared for their lives. Yet all these events so described were caught on video by Canney's camera. Yet the report would offer "evidence" for the building of a case against us - and indeed beginning with a letter by Ward Scott, followed by the first official act of Mayor Gib Coerper, and most recently an interview with Watson by Charles Goston in the highly dubious publication "Black College Monthly" they began to weave together a paper trail to back their claim that they needed to take some kind of pre-emptive action against me before I committed a Columbine or Virginia Tech style massacre or a repeat of a recent case of a person gunning down the members of a City government. It was the police reports that laid the foundation for the defamatory charges.

But when I asked for the report of the "non-disturbance" and the fact that a disturbance complaint was filed by someone in City Hall for my mere appearance there - I was informed by the officer that "this was a non-reporting incident." Well now wasn't that convenient.

Standing in the distance, observing my interaction and conversation with the officer in question, was Deputy Chief Clayton Reiter. I had no prior experience with him and no opinion about him.

Although I was told by the officer that no report would be filed I informed him I would be making the request for the report as well as the dispatch logs. When I got next door to the APD and began to ask for the documents with the confused dispatcher I was suddenly greated from behind by Major Reiter.

"Mr. Grapski," he informed me, "I understand you requested a report. I have instructed the officer to write up such a report and will provide it to you within the next two days." And indeed he did. I did not have to argue with him. Indeed I did not even have to contact him. He did it because it was his duty and the law. And that was all it took.

As a result of the trust I gained from that experience when I discovered the mischief going on with regard to the bank account incident I contacted Deputy Chief Reiter. All of our conversations (except our phone conversations) were recorded.

I asked Reiter how to file a complaint. He explained that to me professionally and courteously. I asked him about Internal Affairs investigations in APD. To that he also directly addressed me without attempts to deny or discourage my learning the information. (The latter information, by the way, was that there was no Internal Affairs process in force within the APD). And I asked him to look into the matters of the leaks as well as some other questionable activities by particular officers.

He did so. Indeed Reiter discovered, and was clearly shocked, that a well-known Watson pawn, Robert Sharpe, had somehow initiated a second police investigation into a matter closed because there was no issue, no crime, and no complaint. What Reiter did not know at the time was that there was indeed a third investigation going on by Jernigan - on his day off - which generated the false and misleading narratives leaked by Watson through Calderwood.

More ironic is that I was following what I had learned from my conversations with Reiter (which took place without the knowledge of Watson or Jernigan) in seeking to file a formal complaint against the Chief and any other actors who were involved in this matter. Jernigan met with me briefly then when confronted with the evidence stated he would have nothing further to say. While I awaited a request to meet with the second in charge, the Deputy Chief, Jernigan came into the waiting room and asked me to step outside. He was clearly upset that I was pursuing this matter and he insisted that the "case was closed." Indeed it was, I assured him, but not that of the activities that violated my rights from within the APD. And it was for that purpose, to redress grievances with my government as protected under our highest law, that I was present at the Police Department quietly waiting in the lobby to file a complaint.

After receiving a series of frantic calls from Watson, Jernigan having ignored the first three attempts, Jernigan stated on the phone "Yes Sir" then returned and proceeded to re-enter the Police station and lock the door - locking me on the outside (with another witness who was there on other business) and locking everyone else in (in violation of the fire code).

I knocked on the door, explained why I was there, and was met this time not only by Jernigan but by Calderwood's son, Patrick Barcia. Barcia asked "is he under arrest yet." At that time I turned to Jernigan (and all of this is on audio tape as well) and offered him my hands to show I was not resisting. He chose not to arrest me. However, as I turned around to walk away (with the intention of filing a charge of violation of my rights to petition for redress of grievances and to access a public police department for public business), Jernigan knocked the recorder out of my hand, said I was under arrest, and I was subsequently thrown head first into the wall by the actions of Barcia and Jernigan. All this for simply seeking to speak with Clayton Reiter to file a complaint according to the procedure that he informed me about the week before.

I am thoroughly convinced that it is this character trait - Reiter's honesty and integrity and his obedience to the law and his duties - that is at the heart of this so-called "investigation" conveniently leaving the door open for Watson to place a "friend" in the highest position and remove someone who was not loyal. That person would not only been relevant for future actions - but would also have access to the records within the APD. Records that might incriminate certain individuals no less than potentially Mr. Watson himself.

So the question really is when did the investigation into Reiter begin, by whom, and for what reason? Who is conducting that investigation? And what is the link to the premature departure of Robert Jernigan? Is Watson orchestrating a cover-up or simply retaining his unfettered control over a law enforcement agency which he has so unscrupulously used for his personal and political benefit.

Perhaps the most disappointing fact in all of this is the position and action (or lack thereof) of the new Sheriff. It has become well-known that the State Attorney Bill Cervone, who is politically and personally connected (as is his higher level staff) certain of the questionable actors and issues in Alachua. Indeed he came up through the ranks under Rod Smith who has acted as Watson's personal attorney, while being paid for this by the City, as well as representing the City without ever having gained authorization for this. Smith, by the way, wrote Watson's contract that was used to give the impression of entitlement to defraud the State pension fund. As you can see there is a very big web of actors and issues raised here in Alachua. And the mischief and indeed criminal activity within the City, by its officials (both political and law-enforcement), has been harbored and condoned by the actions and inactions of Cervone.

But one would have expected more from Darnell. After all her mission is one of cleaning up corruption and ineptitude in the ACSO. And that cannot be accomplished without recognizing its "part" in the greater "whole" of corrupted agencies and actors. But Sadie appears to fall into the trap of thinking politically while holding an office that requires one to think legally. A condition unfortunately brought on by the "elected" nature of her office - a means of appointment never intended to have such consequences. Consequences which are deadly, in a literal sense for some (who are the victims of police abuses of authority), but more importantly are fatal for a society founded on laws rather than the (political) will and whims of "men" (this including, of course, women too).

The void created by Jernigan's unexpected early departure prior to a hand selected successor forced Watson to make a choice. Leave Reiter in charge or find a way to eliminate him. In that scenario, however, he would be forced to turn to the Sherrif.

And Darnell is intimately familiar with Watson's history and the facts of his wrongdoings and abuses of power and authority and misuse of the APD and the police powers. She had the opportunity to place within that agency, for the interim, a person with no connections. A person independent. A person upstanding in the eyes of the community without question.

A person who would be unwilling to act as a pawn. And a person who would guard the records still in existence. And a person, even, who might actually enforce the law within the jurisdiction of Alachua and upon those who have misused their lawfully entrusted authority.

She had many persons to choose from among her staff. Yet she chose instead the "politically" expendient solution rather than that in the best interest of the community, the public good, and justice. Instead of ensuring that this haven of corruption was secured by a person of her choosing with an intent to ensure that the multitude of complaints by citizens that have mounted over the years were addressed she chose the cop-out of leaving the decision up to Watson. And Watson, predictably, has chosen a friend and ally.

Darnell deserves more time to try and clean up the Sheriff's Department. She has only had an abbreviated term of office. But to justify her remaining there she needs to show a commitment to be "above the politics" and instead to be committed, without hesitation or waiver, to the law and justice. She has failed so far to demonstrate that trait. If she does not change her approach in the next year and instead continues to dodge the political hot-potato of holding fellow local political actors to account, as has Cervone, a proper alternative needs to be found to fill that job. Just as we need, desperately, an honest, ethical, and independent actor with a strong commitment to law and justice to unseat Bill Cervone from his seemingly secure throne of inaction.

In the meantime I suggest that you keep a close eye on the APD and on its new interim Chief. DeCoursey too needs to be given a chance to prove himself before a firm judgment on his record at APD can be delivered. Who knows which way he will go? Will he play the pawn? Will he play the patsy? Or will he just take home the paycheck and look the other way? Or will he defy the clear rationale for his being chosen by Watson and do the job and do it well? Only time will tell. There are many who will proclaim, and at this point we can only assume they are correct, that he is as professional as Reiter. But only pressure from the public and the enforement of openness and transparency in the department will ensure that this happens.

When the criminals are in charge of the law one must ask if there is really any law any longer. Or is it just brute force? In such a scenario are we truly free or have we just not stepped on the wrong toes or accidentally witnessed the wrong thing (yet)? Perhaps DeCoursey could set the tone by immediately recognizing the "stink" that has been generating from the APD and City Hall, which no one can deny, and call for an independent investigation into the numerous allegations of corruption, criminality, and fraud that have been raised for nearly a decade. The FDLE has the capability of providing just such a service if called upon to perform it. I would encourage Capt. DeCoursey (now Chief DeCoursey) to take that action and call upon other members of the community to do so as well, to do so "on record," and to do so both privately to the man himself and publicly.

Clovis has fired Deputy Chief Clayton Reiter "WHY"

CW has completed his task....CW fired the Deputy Chief after a 4 week internal investigation. This sounds like another violation of a labor law. Once again CW has no regard for competent employees. Reduction of staff, equipment visibly in poor condition but we can have a outside shower and and give CW a big raise.... When the federal inspectors arrive in Alachua (and they are coming) be sure to maintain accurate and consistent files properly dated.

Thank you

Thank you for the news and announcement.

We would not likely have heard about it until next Thursday in the Herald - if at all.

Will the Gainesville Sun get off its you know what and get the balls to investigate this - heck, why go for broke, can they at least REPORT IT!!

It doesn't surprise me. But its time for people to begin uniting, speaking out, and putting a stop to this nonsense. And that means standing up to those with the AUTHORITY (not just power) to DO something about this - that means Sadie Darnell, that means Bill Cervone, that means the FDLE - and unfortunately all we seem to be likely is it also means the Feds.

But why do we have to wait to this situation explodes so bad - and cannot someone in OFFICE right now, with the AUTHORITY (and oh - by the way - if one of you is reading this) that does not mean with the POWER it means with the OBLIGATION.

But it is YOU, indeed if one of you IS reading this, it is YOU more then any of the others (because you are curious enough to read things about this) that are responsible for this being the case. YOU are more why the system is broken than they are.

They exploit the system. You may not. But you ENFORCE the system - rather than the law - by you INACTIONS (as well, in some of your cases, Mr. Cervone, by your "actions").

Something is rotten and it ain't as far away as Denmark and all the kiddies laugh that the Emperor has no clothes - yet all of the Emperors paid wait-staff still praise him on the brilliance of his garb and his "taste" in choosing it.

When will enough be enough? Is no one "in" office even the least bit "embarrassed" by the fact that they are "supposed" to be ensuring this doesn't happen?

Or perhaps more importantly - when are we going to get "candidates" for these offices that regret that the office is an elected position but runs anyway, and says it like it is, and then does it like it ought to be.

For instance - Bill Cervone (and yes I am speaking to many of my friends) is not the WORST State Attorney in the State. But what does that mean? That is acceptable? And enough to continue supporting him.

Is there not a single lawyer in town willing to RUN for State Attorney. And heck - here's a suggestion - instead of having overzealous prosecutors be the "normal candidate" - maybe some lawyer who just might care about JUSTICE (that means making sure the guilty are convicted AS WELL as making sure the innocent ARE NOT - and indeed - are not PROSECUTED just for the fact that you "can" (you have the POWER) do it.

Is there not a single person holding a J.D. in this town willing to oppose this man. Its not the fact that he is the worst (I admit its true - in Florida - he's among one of the least worse). But least worse does not equate to best.

And should that not be the standard we expect - indeed - demand?

Chaos at the alachua poloce department

i do not know why the city of alachua is Promoting from within the department and i think that everybody that is currently to dumb to be promoted up within the department cause they are to busy trying to meet there ticket quota the the old police chief has set for them and if they already met there ticket quota they are stopping different businesses and flirt with the employees that is working there

Speaking of dumb

Free Beer has been drinking TOO much or was asleep during high school. You need to take a refresher course in spelling and grammar. Learn the difference between to and too, also there and their.

The falling out between

The falling out between Watson, Jernigan and subsequently Reiter's absence stems from the resignation of Detetctive Lloyd

More conjectures

Why do you think that there is a fall out between Watson and Jernigan? Have you asked either of these men?

Honest Answers

Do you think either of these two men would give you an honest answer? I doubt one of them would comment at the moment. And the other I doubt would give you the time of day to ask the question in the first place even if you managed to find him "at work" the few moments he actually spends there rather than at a local Gainesville barber shop.

Why does it appear that there has been a falling out. Ask yourself the question why Jernigan didnt tell Watson that he was leaving in advance. Why did it happen unannounced and all of a sudden. And why did Watson have to find a way to remove Reiter before Reiter could be in charge.

Its so obvious that everyone can see what is going on. But just like the Nazis the bigger the lie the more people just accept it and move on with their daily lives. And we know what happens in those situations.

Unbelievable

When anyone plays the "they are Nazis" card they loose all credibility. We know that Alachua and America have no relationship to Nazi Germany. When you try to instill fear in people with that referrence you show your left wing bias. Why don't you state facts instead of rumors and conspiracies?

By your own logic

Quote from the original comment:

But just like the Nazis the bigger the lie the more people just accept it and move on with their daily lives. And we know what happens in those situations.

So the commentor did not do as you describe.  There is no "calling" anyone a Nazi.  So your retort is unsound.  Except for its emotional impact which you are relying upon to get the reader to ignore the point rather than to convince the reader that the point is invalid.

What the commentor does say is that "like" the Nazis (or the context of 1930s Germany - the perior of the rise of the Nazi party in power and its control over a country and dominance over a population) the tactic of the "Big Lie" tends to have a very real effect.

We do not "know" that Alachua nad America have "no relationship" to Nazi Germany.  In fact there are thousands upon thousands of "relationships" that could be validly drawn.  As well as others which could not.  But to say there are none is simple ignorance or naivete.

It is the "likeness" of this particular aspect of the two situations that the commentator is bringing to focus - not the differences.  And that is a legitimate point and indeed one that upon reflection I believe has merit.

What the commentor does not do is to "try and instill fear" in anyone.  There is no issue of fear.

There is also no indication of a "left wing" bias.  Indeed there is no indication of the commentor's ideological leanings at all.  And of course - the Nazi party was a right wing party if you need to know the facts.  But that gets us off down the road of the silliness of right/left, liberal/democrat.

Indeed the responder here has committed the  very same fallacy that he/she accuses the commentor of making.  Simply by playing the "left wing bias" card do you, the responder, not fall into the same category?  Do you not therefore lose all credibility (at least in that response)?

The commentator did not mention a "rumor" or a "conspiracy" but indeed referred to a fact.  You may not agree with the description of the fact (a parallel between two points in time and place) but this is not a rumor or conspiracy but a contention of a historical parallel.

The "fear" factor is also imminent in your retort as well.  People have come to "fear" raising such historical points of reference because they will be attacked for simply uttering the sound.

Indeed what you, the reader (and responder) should do is to directly address the alleged parallel rather than dismiss it out of hand.  In fact I would argue that in the "Nazi context" you would find exactly that latter behavior as the norm.  It is "officially" not acceptable to raise the point, so don't do it.  But then, what if the point has merit?

If you think that raising the

If you think that raising the issue of parallels to the Nazis or Nazism is inherently discrediting than you are an example of a "good Nazi". Nazis and Nazism was not about killing or even hating the Jews. It was not even about world domination. It was about good people letting evil happen without saying anything about it. That is what defined a "good Nazi." Not the one who did the act or condoned the actions. But the ones who knew about them, looked the other way, and said and did nothing in response.

Nice spin

That is a nice spin that you put on the idea that Americans don't understand arguments and blindly follow false prophets. We have a First Amendment that allows individuals to speak their biased views. However, the majority can see where their arguments are headed, just like yours. Every city has their Grapski types. They have a point but are not able to articulate their views because of their behavior. They become cartoon characters. I will address the subject - and some analysis

I will indeed address this subject of the validity of reference to Nazis in discourse. The many comments are reflections of a general misunderstanding of "good debate" and "reasoned logic" (as well as other forms of reason). But I will do this in a more full treatment of the subject after giving it some thought. It is indeed an important issue to discuss under Myths and Misunderstandings (one of the sections of the site that is being developed).

But lets take for example this particular response by one of the anonymous posters (I encourage people to register an account and post in a "verified" fashion. Your information will not be visible to anyone without your permission and you can establish your undisputed "identity" here in the discussions).

The above comment "Nice spin" you will see has six sentences. So let's begin by analyzing them first in their parts and then in their whole: (Those whose comments are being criticized should take no offense. Such criticism is directed not at you, personally (an ad hominem attack), but at your argument. Perhaps later I will use this same argument for a fuller example of how to analyze and thus to refute arguments. Here I want to stick to simple and obvious points.

Sentence one: "That is a nice spin that you put on the idea that Americans don't understand arguments and blindly follow false prophets."

Elements in this sentence: (a) that the target of the comment [the subject - or in this case - the object of this person's criticism ("Reality" at 18:22)] has [the predicate - what is being "predicated of" that subject (person) or we could say "what is being said of them] "placed a 'spin" on an argument; (b) that this spin says that "Americans (as a whole) [the subject] don't understand arguments [predicate 1] and [predicate 2] blindy follow false prophets."

So where in the previous post does the commentator ("Reality") makes these claims?

  • 1) "Reality" has "placed a 'spin' on an argument.
  • 2) That "spin" says that "Americans" do not understand arguments.
  • And 3) That "spin" says that "Americans" blindly follow "false profits".

One would agree, would one not, that all three of these claims are inherent in (and can be plainly identified therein) the response of an "anonymous" poster at 19:30 ("Nice spin")? [If not please feel free to state why in response to this]. Are there other elements that I have left out? Have I mischaracterized them and if so how?

OK. So let's start with (1). Did "Reality" "place a spin" on an argument?

Well, what "argument" is "anonymous 19:30" referring to? That is not clearly identified. We can assume it comes between the argument that clearly started it (contained the reference to the word "Nazi") at 14:45 and his own (at 19:30).

As I read it the response is directly to the immediately preceding comment (at 18:22 "If you think that ..."). Clearly the response falls under it hierarchically not just chronologically (that is the relevance of the indentation in the commenting section - you can also review threads by choosing from the button selecting "By Thread" or "By Chronology" etc. to ease your viewing).

The summary that I make of that argument ("Reality" 18:22) is that there is nothing inherently wrong with referring to a historical or other parallel to the Nazis in a discussion.

In itself this must be accepted by anyone seeking to reason. It is an example of an attempt to distract the reader from the point by raising an emotional argument - meant to provoke a merely emotional response without bothering to determine, for themselves, the content or merit of the argument.

[SIDE NOTE: In effect one could reasonanly argue that, in this rhetorical move, the critic is actually proving - at least in a limited fashion (either that they themselves; or that they assume that others (or the majority thereof)) are "don't understand arguments" as well as "blindly follow false prophets." After all they did not give the reader an attempt to "understand" this argument and instead expected a reflexive reaction to be repulsed from doing so simply because of the criticism herein raised.]

But you will find, upon review, that this author ("Realist") never committed this first alleged act of "putting a spin" on anything. Indeed "Realist" does not spin but answers a statement with what is a fairly clearly reasoned retort. It first defines the terms the author is using. Particularly that of "Nazi."

The definition is further qualified by specific reference to a concept of a "good Nazi" rather than a "mere Nazi."

And then this term, "good Nazi," is defined as not those who committed certain acts of the Nazi party, either as officials or as simple subjects under their rule, but those more importantly who did nothing (and said nothing) while those acts were taking place around them.

This definition excludes the other possible definitions such as "one who hated Jews" (or "one who hated "Gypsies" or even "one who hated communists" - because all of those are "predicates" of the "subject" Nazi.). And it is the use of these words - different meanings with the same sound (homonymous words - or in another way of saying this - the term is ambiguous (unless defined in more detail)). And this is exactly what "Realist" did. He provided a definition from which we must now work to analyze criticisms (2) and (3).

Point (2) ascribed by "anonymous 19:30" to "Realist's" point is that he commits himself, somehow, in his statement to the claim that "Americans don't understand arguments."

Well we first have to deal with the term "American" or "Americans" clearly - for what does this mean, particularly in this context. From "Anonymous 19:30" it appears that he/she is referring to the whole class of "Americans." Thus we may, from this, assume he means, at minimum, all natural born or naturalized citizens of this particular nation. This point will equally apply to analysis of point (3).

But the particular statement in question by "Realist" makes no reference to Americans as such. Indeed it makes no reference whatsoever to Americans. Indeed the argument is equally applicable to all persons of any nation. It is not restricted in any way to Americans but its focus is, instead, on the argument that using the mere term "Nazi" in any sentence or argument automatically disqualifies the argument as unsound and thus as necessarily rejected.

What it does refer to in terms of Americans, at best, is indirect and has to be taken out of the prior posts - which refer to this particular context of Alachua. And so at best one should have limited it to "Alachuans" or "those reading this thread." It makes no particular attack on Americans or anyone. And again is merely a defense of the use of a historical fact, term, or analogy in a debate. This alone cannot render the argument invalid.

So getting back to the claim that "Realist" argues that someone (eliminating Americans) is being accused of "not understanding arguments" - we again see a general statements. "Arguments," plural, is apparently a reference to a universal ignorance or inability to understand. And nothing in the statement of "Realist" can be legitimately characterized as such.

So we now get down to the charge of saying that a particular group "is incapable of understanding arguments." But no where in "Realist's" argument can this claim be found. It is, rather, found implied in the retort by "Anonymous." Who is in actuality trying to convince the reader to not pay attention to the prior statement and not to use their own faculty of judgment in concluding its points or merits. And that is itself actually an indication of a "belief" implied in the comment of "Anonymous" that the readers here indeed are incapable of "understanding arguments." For all "Realist" has done is lay out an argument for all to read, evalute the argument from their own understanding, and thus judge for themselves.

"Anonymous'" retort is to prevent them from doing so. And why? On what reason?

Well let's look at claim (3) that the group (remember we have removed the specific reference to Americans as not necessarily there to limit the scope or reference of that of "Reality") "blindly follows leaders."

Well again no where in the comment of "Reality" is this claim made. Or even reasonably implied. Nothing logically and necessarily entails this third, let alone the second, claim as being contained in the original comment.

And once again, a little reflection, and what we see is a retort from "Anonymous" which can at most hope (and therefore may imply) that this very claim (introduced by "Anonymous" and not "Reality") is true.

Anonymous 19:30 wants the readers here to "follow blindly" his retort and to not use their own "reason" in evaluating the point in the comment.

I can get to the rest of the sentences in this. But will wait - as this is really the most important refutation needed for such a comment. And I am considering having such "critical analysis" of particular such as this, in the logical sense, posted in another secton of the site, linked to the discussion thread, but taking up less space. I also remind the reader that you can choose how to view comments - hierarchically by thread, chronologically, etc..

And last but not least lets go back to the use of the word "spin." For what is clear is that "Realist" did not attempt to "spin" anything. He/she merely raised an objection to a blanket statement that they believed was logically unsound and provided their reasonings for their criticism and judgment. That is not "spin."

The effort to divert attention away from the substantive points in "Reality's" comment, however, is exactly what "spin" is defined, in part, as - it is an attempt to mislead and misdirect the reader from the actual claims at issue without having to deal with them reasonably and honestly. That is the aim and objective of "spin" in part. Other objectives are also to fill the reader's head with an "alternative" view that has not been made based on reason but on its anticipated effect in misleading or misdirection - or in the lesser of this form - to re-direct the attention of a reader or listener somewhere else or even just off the topic entirely.

A question

Mr. Grapski, will address the use of rumors, conspiracy theories and conjectures in denigrating the city and the police force?

Ad infinitum nonsense

I have no need to address the above. If you care to register an account I would be happy to discuss the matter with you one on one.

Until then I will just point out that you make reference to "rumors" and "conspiracy theories" (itself a fictitious concept as a conspiracy is nothing more than two people agreeing to work together for a common goal and a "theory" is just that - a theory), and "conjectures."

Conjectures are perfectly reasonable in discussion and debate. And when I make conjectures I identify them as such.

Rumors are sometimes reasonable in discussion and debate - particularly when the question is whether the rumor has something to it or not. What you should be doing is examining what you refer to as "rumor."

And of course all of the above are merely conjectures on your part. You provide no particular or specific reference. And you point out no rumor, conspiracy theory (that we can leave out because it is as I said a fictitious concept with no real meaning), or conjecture.

Denigrating? Well again it is your opinion. When the truth hurts - it hurts - denigrating or not. Perhaps if the City and the APD were not rife with corruption there would be no issue. But the fact remains that there is.

Next time you submit something - try submitting something that can actually be answered.

Nazi

Everyone knows that as soon as you bring up Nazi that your argument is weak and you hope to sway people with false facts.

Logical Fallacies

Actually everyone does not "know" that. In fact it is a false statement - and indeed a logical fallacy.

You make a false assumption that merely "bringing up" a reference to Nazis necessarily entails "false facts" being presented.

Can you please explain how the two are necessarily entailed if you are going to make such a bold statement?

Godwin's Law

Godwin's Law- As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one."

The Nazi Argument vs. the Nazi Retort

We cannot simply "rule out" any and every reference to "Nazis" or "Hitler" as inappropriate or without merit.

Indeed taking such a view renders us far more likely to repeat the errors of the past rather than learning from them.

When in the course of an argument someone merely calls someone "a Hitler" (as we often see coming from our own government propaganda) that is an example of little merit.  Yet it is also the time when this use tends to go unquestioned.  (Saddam Hussein is the next Hitler, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the next Hitler, ad infinitium)

But when someone makes a reference to a historical parallel - for example in this case: the idea of ordinary citizens (in a Republic by the way (or a democracy) - for Germany's Weimar Republic was considered by many at the time the "ideal" of a modern republic (and better than the form in practice in the U.S.)) standing by, watching while atrocities took place (or while their government was taken over from the inside and distorted), and doing and saying nothing - that indeed is a legitimate and often significant point to raise.

Those who forget history (or censor it by removing unwanted references from current discourse) are bound to repeat it.

I would recommend a book for those who want to understand what a "good Nazi" really means - and what it means to be a citizen in a country which is being taken over from within (while people are rendered, or at least feal, powerless to do anything about it) and further as that process "legitimizes" itself through propaganda (and in addition often fear).

Defying Hitler

I listened to the book on audio in my car.  Indeed this is a great book for such purposes as it "reads" well in this form.  You get the impact as if the narrator was the actual author speaking directly to you.  (It is almost like a diary in form) But I am sure that reading it in print will have an equally important impact.

The book is Defying Hitler by Sebastian Haffner.  [Print at Amazon - Audio at Audible]

It was written while in exile in London in 1939 but details the author's experience growing up in Germany from the first war through the rise of Hitler and spends most of the time describing the experiences of an ordinary citizen in the early 1930s.

It is truly disturbing in its overwhelming parallels to today's American context.

I think it would be a worth-while read (or listen) for every American.  Because it is about the question of how could that of happened there (and no - you cannot simply state that "It cannot happen here" - because the lesson of the book is just that, how easy it is for things like that to come about and particularly in well-educated and even affluent nations (or among those portions of a population)).

In summary the "Nazi argument" (or raising parallels) is a perfectly legitimate point to raise in a debate or discourse.  It may not be entirely accurate or even applicable.  But that has to come from the use and the context.  It cannot simply be rendered null and void by the simplistic "Nazi retort."  (If you raise the issue of Nazis or Hitler you have a bad or weak argument).

Quite the contrary.  Given the concept that those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it it is all the more important to consider such parallels and to listen when someone else raises the point.  Its not that hard to distinguish from the propaganda (which is acceptable it appears when it is official) and the parallel.

You have much to offer

Mr. Grapski

I see clearly that you have so much to offer. Thank you for your sensible approach to such reactive issues. I hope that you continue to share your thoughts on this site. I think I could learn a great deal from you. The issue of the police department has spawned the issue of nazis but it has been very illuminating reading. I hope one day to meet you and speak in person.

Thank you for the book suggestion. I think again you have much to share with others. Can I make a suggestion for your site? Amazon.com has a partners program that a friend of mine uses on her website. If you linked to their book through them you could use it to help defray the cost of yours. I don't know about Audible.com if they have a similar program as I did not even know about them until you posted the link. I drive for work several times during the week over two hours each way. So listening to a book on CD would be a wonderful way to take advantage of that time. I am going to explore their site some more. Thank you again. You are a benefit to our community.

More information please.

More information please. What do you know about this? There are many of us very interested and concerned. I met Detective Lloyd one day on the street, so to speak. It was actually at a local business. Why did he all of a sudden resign? He seemed like he was a professional officer.

Rumors

Rumors, conjecture, anonymous sources. It sounds like a witch hunt to me.

Hey Grapski can you put your

Hey Grapski can you put your star voting on the comments too. This one should get a 1/5 from me.

What???

What I see are questions not a witch hunt. What I don't see is reporting on what Grapski raises and that is the COINCIDENCE of the resignation of Jernigan and the investigation of Reiter.

And I think the questions Grapski raises here are exactly what should be being asked by the news. I don't see TV20 or the Sun doing it. Even the High Springs paper wrote about this without really asking the hard questions. Do some digging. Grapski is right that the whole thing sounds too fishy.

It is all too convenient for Watson. And everyone knows that Watson has things to hide in the APD. Grapski proved the dual office holding and the pension thing. But no charges have ever been brought. And when there is smoke there is fire. If they were so willing to break those laws what other things do you think they have been doing?

I am a resident of Alachua and I am afraid of my police department. Is that a normal state of affairs in America? Somebody do something about this already. Its gone too far.

Honest people need not be afraid

I live in Alachua and I am not afraid nor are any of my friends. The only people who are afraid are those who break the laws.

Fascism Anyone? The 14 characteristics of Fascism

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism -- Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights -- Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to 'look the other way' or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause -- The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4. Supremacy of the Military -- Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
5. Rampant Sexism -- The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and antigay legislation and national policy.
6. Controlled Mass Media -- Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or through sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in wartime, is very common.
7. Obsession with National Security -- Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined -- Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
9. Corporate Power is Protected -- The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed -- Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely or are severely suppressed.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts -- Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment -- Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses, and even forego civil liberties, in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption -- Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions, and who use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections -- Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against (or even the assassination of) opposition candidates, the use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and the manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

The ones breaking the laws

The ones breaking the laws are also the ones in charge of making and enforcing them. That certainly gives me reason to fear. And I know that many of my neighbors are afraid of the APD. They do not trust them. We have all seen too many of them watch as drug deals go down in our neighborhood and do nothing. Even one time seeing the cop talk to the dealer right there on the street. He saw the deal go down and just talked to him. We have many reasons to be afraid. There was just a guy beaten up at Spindrifters parking lot and the cops came and threatened to arrest the people who said they were eyewitnesses because when they asked to tell them what they saw the cops told them to go away or be arrested themselves. I thought the victim was going to be arrested as all the attackers had already fled. It made me wonder if these cops and these attackers are not one and the same. I have called APD and they came and told me that they could do nothing about the vandalism to my yard and house. Nothing. And you say we are not afraid in Alachua. Maybe you are not. But I am not a criminal and I am afraid of both those prowling around and those patrolling around.

You must be FREE BEER

You must be FREE BEER to be at the Spindrifter to see the fight. Did you give the police an eyewitness statement? Were you sober enough to remember? Like I said before honest people have nothing to fear from the Alachua police. People who spend their Saturday nights at bars drinking and fighting should fear the police.

Drugi?

And don't forget he hangs out in drug infested neighborhoods

Very informative

Than you
This is very informative. Why don't we see the sun reporting this story. What else is happening that we have no idea about.

I agree. Your essay or

I agree. Your essay or column or whatever it is was very informing. I see a couple of good posts in comments to and a lot of irrelevant things. I guess we have to put up with that. But I read in your first post down below you mentioning a way to set up a gauge to evaluate responses. And I agree that your star thing is good but I keep putting my entry in and it says its there but then when I come back its gone. You may have a problem with that. Maybe we could have a star system for your main post and a flame system or a combination of flames and stars to rate posts. I'm glad it has been tame in the sense of name calling. But some of the responses dont really respond to anything. If we had a rating system in which we could all participate even without posting maybe we could encourage good discussion developing.

I have a couple of questions too. Will you respond in the comments? And what if we spin off new topics from things that come up. I think a good discussion of the Nazi thing would be good and would really be interested in how you would respond to it. But do you know also what we can do to find out when Reiter's situation started and why. I am really interested in finding out and dont understand why that isnt being reported.

Thank you Charlie Grapski for your courage to stand up to this problem. I didnt know there were such problems till I started to hear what you were going through. At first like most people it was just noise in the background with the TV news on and then it just didnt sound right anymore. So I got curious and started talking to my friends. And they told me eveybody new about it but they just dont talk about it. I have been thinking to myself ever since if that is not the problem and that is why I think that Nazi argument is just as bogus as attacking Hillary for her comment on RFK.

I HOPE YOU WILL POST MORE SOON
